The right Canada application from Nigeria depends on your goal. Visitors generally need a visitor visa, international students need a study permit, most temporary workers need a work permit, and people who want to settle permanently must qualify through Express Entry, a provincial program, family sponsorship or another permanent residence pathway. Start with your purpose—not with a generic visa checklist.

Start With the Global Canada Visa Guide

This Nigeria guide adds country-specific reminders about document planning, biometrics in Lagos and Abuja, application fees and fraud prevention. Use it with the global guide, then follow the official IRCC process for the pathway matching your goal.

If You Plan to Study, Work or Immigrate

A visitor visa is only for a temporary visit. It does not authorize long-term study, employment or permanent residence. If your real goal is education, work or settlement, use the permit or immigration program created for that purpose.

Canada application types for Nigerian applicants
Your goalApplication to researchTypical starting point
Visit Canada temporarilyVisitor visa / Temporary Resident VisaA credible temporary purpose, sufficient funds, admissibility and evidence that you will leave after the visit.
Study in CanadaStudy permitAcceptance from a designated learning institution, required provincial or territorial attestation and financial support.
Work in Canada temporarilyWork permitEligibility for an employer-specific or open work permit and the documents required for that category.
Join eligible family in CanadaFamily sponsorship or Super VisaA qualifying relationship and the requirements of the specific family program.
Settle in Canada permanentlyPermanent residence pathwayEligibility through Express Entry, a provincial program, sponsorship or another active IRCC program.

A visa is a travel document, while a study or work permit authorizes a specific activity. Permanent residence is a separate legal status. IRCC may issue the travel document you need with an approved permit, so do not submit an unrelated visitor application unless the official instructions tell you to.

Canada Study Permit From Nigeria

Nigerian students normally apply online for a study permit after receiving a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution. Most applicants also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter unless an exemption applies. For Quebec, follow the current instructions for a Quebec Acceptance Certificate.

Study-permit documents to prepare
DocumentWhat it helps establish
Valid passport or travel documentConfirms your identity and supports the period covered by the application.
Letter of acceptance from a DLIShows that an eligible Canadian school admitted you to a program.
PAL, TAL or Quebec document, when requiredMeets the provincial or territorial requirement for your application.
Proof of financial supportShows how tuition, living costs and transportation will be paid.
Study plan or letter of explanationExplains the program choice, its connection to your background and plans after the authorized stay.
Identity, family and education recordsSupports the facts entered in your forms and your academic history.
Medical exam or other requested evidenceMeets additional requirements generated by your circumstances and personalized checklist.

IRCC currently lists a CAN$150 study-permit fee, with biometrics and third-party costs potentially added. Admission to a school does not guarantee permit approval. Check the current financial-support rules, attestation requirements and your personalized checklist immediately before submitting.

Canada Work Permit From Nigeria

Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work temporarily in Canada. Employer-specific permits generally require a genuine job offer and either a Labour Market Impact Assessment or the correct LMIA-exempt employer documentation. Open work permits are available only in defined situations and are not a general option for everyone without a job offer.

IRCC currently lists a CAN$155 work-permit fee. A CAN$100 open-work-permit-holder fee applies when required, and biometrics may be separate. The job, employer, permit category and applicant history determine the supporting documents and whether a medical exam is needed.

Permanent Residence From Nigeria

Nigerian citizens may qualify for permanent residence through federal economic immigration, a provincial or territorial nominee program, family sponsorship or another active pathway. Express Entry manages the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program, each with different minimum criteria.

An economic immigration file may require an approved language test, education records or an educational credential assessment, detailed work-history evidence and proof of funds where applicable. Entering the Express Entry pool does not guarantee an invitation to apply. A provincial nomination also requires eligibility under the province’s active stream.

Family Applications and the Super Visa

Family sponsorship may be available when an eligible Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor a qualifying relative. Parents and grandparents planning an extended temporary visit may instead research the Super Visa, which has its own host-income, relationship, medical-exam and health-insurance requirements. These are separate processes, so compare the purpose and eligibility rules before applying.

Visitor Visa Documents for Applicants in Nigeria

Most travellers using a Nigerian passport need a visitor visa for a temporary trip to Canada. A visitor application should explain the purpose and length of the trip, how it will be funded and why the applicant will leave Canada after the authorized stay. IRCC assesses the full circumstances; no bank balance, invitation letter or single document guarantees approval.

Visitor documents to organize before applying

Use the personalized checklist generated in your IRCC account. Do not rely on a document list copied from another applicant or shared in a social-media group.

Apply Online Through IRCC

Begin on Canada.ca and use the IRCC account or portal identified for your application type. Answer the eligibility questions carefully, enter names and dates exactly as they appear in your records, upload readable evidence and keep your fee receipt and application number. Monitor the account for biometrics, medical, interview, document or passport requests.

💡

You can apply without an agent. A representative cannot guarantee approval, sell a genuine job or move an application ahead of others.

Biometrics in Lagos and Abuja

IRCC lists official Canada Visa Application Centres in Lagos and Abuja. If biometrics are required, wait for your Biometrics Instruction Letter before booking through the official VAC service. VACs collect biometrics and transmit requested passports or documents; they do not decide applications.

Canada Visa and Immigration Scams in Nigeria

Treat guaranteed visas, guaranteed admission, paid job offers, special embassy connections, sold LMIAs and requests for false documents as warning signs. You remain responsible for every form and document submitted in your name. Keep control of your email and IRCC account, obtain receipts, and verify any paid Canadian immigration representative before signing a contract.

Warning signs and safer checks
Warning signWhat to do
Guaranteed visa, permit or permanent residenceNo representative can guarantee an IRCC decision.
Payment requested for a job offer or LMIAResearch the employer independently and do not buy a job or LMIA.
Agent will not show the submitted applicationKeep your own copies, application number and account access.
Request for blank signatures or altered evidenceNever sign blank forms or submit false information.
Unlicensed paid representativeVerify the person with the relevant Canadian law society, Quebec regulator or the CICC.

Processing Times, Passport Requests and Refusals

Processing estimates vary by application type, country and case complexity. Use IRCC’s live tool and avoid non-refundable travel based on an estimate. If IRCC requests your passport, follow the letter and current Nigeria VAC instructions; never submit it before receiving a request.

If an application is refused, read the reasons before applying again. A new application should accurately address the concerns with relevant evidence. Repeating the same file or changing facts without support is unlikely to help and may create credibility problems.
