Automatic does not mean guaranteed
An automatic scholarship usually means no extra form, not that every admitted student receives money. Confirm eligible programs, fee status, academic thresholds and whether selection is competitive. Check the admission offer and student portal for the actual amount and conditions.
Separate applications can close earlier
Pearson requires school nomination by October 9, 2026, U of T admission by October 16 and scholarship documents by November 6. UBC International Scholars requires both the admission and award applications by November 15. McGill tells applicants not to wait for admission before completing its major entrance scholarship application.
Renewal and stacking rules
Ask whether an award is one-time or renewable, which grades and course load are required, and whether changing programs affects it. Confirm whether multiple awards can be held together. Scholarship values are generally determined by published rules and the official offer; do not assume they can be negotiated.
Compare net cost, not the headline award
Subtract the confirmed award from tuition and mandatory fees for each year, then add housing, food, insurance, transport, books and travel. A large multi-year award may still leave a substantial gap, while a smaller award at a lower-cost institution may produce a better net budget.
