Can you study in Canada without IELTS?

Yes, where the admissions office accepts another way to prove English proficiency. This can be a different test, an education-based exemption or a recognized pathway program. It does not mean automatic admission, a guaranteed study permit or permission to skip every language requirement. Colleges and universities accepting Duolingo in Canada

Niagara College, the University of Waterloo and the University of Alberta publish Duolingo routes, but their minimum scores are not interchangeable. Niagara distinguishes diploma/certificate admission from degree and graduate programs. Waterloo requires specific Literacy and Production subscores, while Alberta publishes a minimum for every subscore. A Duolingo listing on a third-party directory is only a lead; the current official admissions page should decide whether you book and submit the test.

Schools accepting previous English education

Some schools assess the language and length of your previous education. Waterloo may exempt an undergraduate applicant whose four most recent years of full-time education were taught in an entirely English-language school system. It asks for official transcripts showing the language of instruction or a qualifying hardcopy school letter sent directly by the school; full-time ESL study does not count. Alberta’s 2026/2027 guidance includes a route based on three years of qualifying full-time education in English. These are school-specific policies, not a Canada-wide waiver.

IELTS waiver requirements and evidence

Do not rely on a generic medium-of-instruction letter. Check how many years must have been taught in English, which countries or institutions qualify, whether every academic subject must have been in English, and who must send the evidence. Record the document deadline and keep written confirmation from admissions. A school may still request a test if the evidence does not meet its policy, and a language waiver does not remove academic prerequisites.

PTE, CELPIP, TOEFL and other IELTS alternatives

Make a shortlist first and choose one test accepted by every program on it. Niagara lists Duolingo and PTE Academic alongside TOEFL; its general diploma PTE threshold is 58 overall with no skill below 53, while the degree/graduate threshold is 60 with no skill below 57. Waterloo lists PTE Academic at 63 overall with 65 in writing and speaking. CELPIP is accepted in the specific Lambton and Northwestern Polytechnic examples above, but it is not a universal college-admission test.

Check the exact test version and delivery method. A requirement for an academic test is not interchangeable with a similarly named general test. Institutions may also distinguish test-centre and home testing. Compare the cost of the test, score reporting and a possible retake instead of choosing by the registration fee alone.

International student eligibility

An overall test score can hide a skill score below the minimum. Compare listening, reading, writing and speaking separately wherever the college sets individual thresholds. Prepare the academic transcripts, credential translations and prerequisite evidence requested for your program. A language waiver does not waive academic prerequisites or remove the need to demonstrate that you qualify for the credential.

For a Canadian study permit, you need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution. Check the official DLI list and do not assume every program at a listed school is PGWP-eligible. A provincial or territorial attestation letter is usually required unless an exemption applies; since January 1, 2026, qualifying master’s and doctoral students at public DLIs are among the exempt groups. 2026/2027 intakes and deadlines

September, January and May availability differs by program and campus. As September 2026 begins, confirm whether your chosen intake still accepts international applications before submitting fees. Work backward from the next available intake: allow time for results, retakes, document assessment, deposits and the immigration process. An advertised intake date is not an application deadline or a promise that a seat remains open.

Admission, study permits and PGWP eligibility

College language acceptance does not establish post-graduation work permit eligibility. IRCC applies separate rules for the institution, program, study history and language evidence. Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates generally need CLB/NCLC 7 for current PGWP applications; other college or non-university graduates generally need 5.
